How to use printable fraction strips
Fraction strips show equal parts of a fixed-length whole. Compare strips only when the original wholes have the same length. Circle models offer a second way to see the same fraction.
Select the shared denominator set, then choose a model denominator and shaded numerator.
Switch between bar and circle models. All strips retain the same whole length.
Download teaching masters. Cut strips along their outer borders or use them uncut to compare equal amounts.
Worked example
3/6 = 1/2
Shade three parts of a strip divided into six equal pieces. They cover half the strip. The model still needs six partitions: replacing them with two would change which parts the diagram represents.
Will the models work on a black-and-white printer?
The bar models use hatching, circle sectors use shading, and every part has a visible outline. Meaning does not depend on hue. Print at actual size when comparing or cutting multiple pages.
What is included in the PDF?
The complete pack contains fraction models, matched-length strips, labeled and blank number lines, both student practice sheets, and a clearly marked teacher answer key. Student-only downloads contain no answers. All materials are original and free to download, with no payment step.
Scope & sources
Common Core Mathematics, 3.NF (printed page 24) describes equal parts, number line representations, equivalence, and comparisons with the same whole; the Grade 3 denominator set is 2, 3, 4, 6, 8. This independent tool supports selected ideas and makes no endorsement or certification claim.
