A note for your next lesson
How a fraction number line locates a/b
The segment from 0 to 1 is one whole unit. Dividing each unit into b equal intervals gives steps of length 1/b. Starting from zero, a of those steps reaches a/b.
Select a denominator set and the fraction to mark.
Choose a span from 0–1 through 0–4, then choose partitions per whole unit.
Read the marker or export blank lines for students to label. A marker between ticks is identified explicitly.
Worked example
2/3 = 4/6
On a 0-to-1 number line divided into six intervals, 2/3 lies at the fourth tick after zero. On a 0-to-2 line with six intervals per unit, it remains four ticks after zero: the full line has twelve intervals.
Where does 4/4 belong?
At 1. Four intervals of length 1/4 make one complete unit, so 4/4 and 1 occupy the same point. Changing the full printed span never changes the numerical value of one unit.
What is included in the PDF?
The complete pack contains fraction models, matched-length strips, labeled and blank number lines, both student practice sheets, and a clearly marked teacher answer key. Student-only downloads contain no answers. All materials are original and free to download, with no payment step.
Scope & sources
Common Core Mathematics, 3.NF (printed page 24) describes equal parts, number line representations, equivalence, and comparisons with the same whole; the Grade 3 denominator set is 2, 3, 4, 6, 8. This independent tool supports selected ideas and makes no endorsement or certification claim.
